Portrait and life painter Beverley Fry
When young I sketched my own family later when my own four children were growing up they were subjects for watercolours, and often to their irritation as sitting still was hard for them. Now I paint my grandchildren and if I paint them in oils it’s easier to work from photos but essential that they are my own as I need to meet the children.
I have over 30 years painting experience. My aim in portraiture is to get a good likeness, capture spirit and make a good painting. I prefer to paint adults as they are usually free to give me sittings.
Working from life is often best but I do take photographs. I’ll then work from them in my studio when the sitter is too busy to sit.
If at all possible I like 12 sittings, generally of about 3 to 4 hours with as many breaks as is necessary for the sitter. It is usually a very pleasant experience for artist and model.
A photograph is one tiny moment in time. The human representation in a painting embodies many thousand glances, slowly a synthesis of the individual forms in paint through the mind of the artist.
It has been said
‘’A successful portrait is a sort of emblem of a sitter coming to terms with themselves that the artist has created on their behalf’’.
I like and agree with that quote it’s a perfect statement.
